Google Fitbit Edge Reportedly Adds Screen and GPS to Fitness Tracker
Google is reportedly working on a new fitness tracker called the Fitbit Edge, which takes a different approach from its recently launched Fitbit Air. The Edge is said to feature a small screen, GPS, notifications, and limited app support, positioning it as a mid-range device between the $99 Fitbit Air and the $399 Pixel Watch 5. Leaked images suggest it resembles the Fitbit Charge, hinting at a potential successor to that model.
The Fitbit Edge is rumored to offer up to seven days of battery life, automatic activity detection, and compatibility with both Android and iOS devices. This contrasts with the Pixel Watch 5, which is Android-only. The inclusion of a screen and app support marks a shift from Google's screenless strategy with the Fitbit Air, which aimed to reduce distractions.
Google's move appears to cater to a broader market, as the company acknowledges that while screenless trackers have a niche audience, the demand for smartwatches with screens is significantly higher. The IDC predicts that 159.7 million smartwatches will ship globally by 2026, compared to just 40.2 million wristbands.
