Google Flies TPUs into Orbit in Ambitious Space-Based Computing Push

Google is set to launch its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) into space next week as part of Project Suncatcher, a proof-of-concept to test the viability of orbital datacenter clusters powered by solar energy.

The TPUs will be launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on October 1, marking the latest phase in Google's ambitious project to harness space-based computing for AI training and inference.

Google acknowledges that the challenges facing its systems are numerous, including surviving the launch process, withstanding solar activity and cosmic rays, and managing heat dissipation in the vacuum of space.
