Google Funds Nuclear Upgrades in Georgia for Data Centers
Georgia Power and Google have announced a significant partnership to increase nuclear power capacity in Georgia. The agreement aims to supply energy-intensive data centers operated by Google while protecting retail electric customers from costs associated with this expansion.
The deal involves financing extended equipment upgrades, known as uprates, at the Hatch and Vogtle nuclear plants. These modifications will enable the reactors to operate more efficiently, allowing for increased power generation without requiring new construction.
The upgrades include replacing or upgrading turbines, high-capacity pumps, motors, and cooling systems. This collaboration is expected to enhance Georgia's nuclear capacity while minimizing costs for retail electric customers.
