Google Gemini Free Users Lose Flash and Pro Access on October 9
Google is making significant changes to its free Gemini app, which will impact users starting October 9. Free users will lose access to the Flash and Pro models, leaving only Flash-Lite available. Google AI Plus subscribers will also lose access to Pro, though they will retain Flash and Flash-Lite. The company will notify AI Plus users via email about when their access changes.
The cost difference is notable. Currently, AI Plus is priced at $4.99 per month, while AI Pro costs $19.99 per month. Users who rely on Pro and want to keep it will face an additional $15 per month, totaling $180 annually at current prices. Google reports that Gemini surpassed 1 billion monthly users in August, making this a change that could affect many people.
Flash-Lite is described as a speedy model for everyday tasks like summarizing and brainstorming. Flash handles a broader range of problems with enhanced reasoning capabilities. Pro is Google's most advanced model, excelling in complex tasks such as coding, math, studying, and handling large files or multimedia. Google advises users to check their account settings before October 9 to understand which model they frequently use.
For eligible U.S. college students, Google offers a free year of AI Pro, valued at $19.99 per month, which can be redeemed through December 31, 2026. Users are encouraged to review their model usage before deciding whether to upgrade their subscription plans.
