Google Gemini Linked to $69K Crypto Scam Involving Tronify.rent
Google Gemini has been linked to a crypto scam where victims lost approximately $69,651 after a user claimed the AI service described Tronify.rent as safe. JP, founder of IOC Investigations, reported that the TRON-focused website defrauded around 80 victims in September. He listed 12 TRON addresses associated with the operation but did not provide a detailed breakdown of the losses.
Tronify.rent presents itself as a noncustodial TRON energy rental service, promising lower transaction costs. However, victim reports suggest otherwise. A Reddit user reported losing 2,590 USDT after connecting their Trust Wallet to the site. Security warnings about Tronify.rent date back to February, with PhishDestroy flagging it as a high-risk domain for crypto phishing and brand impersonation.
The most unusual aspect of the report involves Google Gemini. JP claimed a victim asked Gemini whether Tronify.rent was safe and received a response endorsing the website. Google has not confirmed this interaction but warns that generative AI can produce inaccurate information and advises users to verify claims independently.
This incident highlights the growing use of AI in crypto scams. In September, TRM Labs documented fake AI trading bot tutorials that stole $517,000 from 224 victims. Google has also warned about cryptocurrency fraud involving artificial intelligence, including fake crypto investments and deceptive AI bot tutorials.
