Google Gemini Model Access Changes to Restrict Free Users Starting October 9
Google is making significant changes to its Gemini app models distribution across subscription tiers. Starting October 9, free users will be restricted to Gemini Flash-Lite and will no longer have access to Flash or Pro. Users with a Google AI Plus subscription, which costs $4.99 a month, will still get Flash-Lite and Flash but lose access to Pro.
AI Pro subscribers, who pay $19.99 a month, will not face any reduction in model access. They will continue to have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. Additionally, AI Pro users will gain access to Deep Think, a reasoning feature previously available only on the $99.99 and $199.99 monthly plans.
Deep Think is designed to work through multiple possibilities before producing an answer, making it suitable for tasks that require extensive reasoning. This new effort level is in addition to the extended-thinking option currently offered for complex problem-solving.
Google also introduced low, medium, and high effort settings for each available model this month. Higher effort levels are designed to produce more thorough responses but will consume more of a user's usage allowance. The latest changes follow Google's move earlier this year to compute-based usage limits, which refresh every five hours and include a weekly cap.
