Google Home Agents Get Smart Home Control via MCP Integration
Google Home users will soon be able to use various AI agents to manage their smart home devices, thanks to integration with the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard.
The company has announced that it will offer an early access build of this feature in the coming weeks, exclusively for Google Home Premium Advanced users. This tier costs $20 per month or $200 annually.
With MCP support, users can control connected devices and monitor activity using natural language, as well as review camera summaries across rooms and create custom smart home dashboards.
The integration is the result of a growing trend in the tech industry, with several major companies including Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, and SpaceXAI supporting MCP. However, experts have raised concerns about security flaws within the standard, such as the lack of enforced authentication, which has led to data breaches in the past.
