Google Home Bolsters AI Capabilities with Model Context Protocol Support
Google Home is expanding its capabilities by incorporating support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a software standard for agent-based chatbot interactions. This integration will allow AI agents to use Google Home to perform smart home tasks, connecting to external APIs through MCP.
The supported agents include Google Antigravity, Claude, Hermes, and Open Claw. According to Google, this integration enables those agents to 'securely work with all of the devices and event history in your Google Home ecosystem.'
Google suggests using natural language to monitor activity, review camera summaries across rooms, control connected devices, and build custom smart home dashboards.
The early access release will initially be limited to Google Home Premium Advanced users, who pay $20 a month or $200 a year. Anthropic introduced MCP in 2024, and the standard has gained wider adoption over the past year, with Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, and SpaceXAI supporting it in some form.
However, experts have raised security concerns about MCP, including insufficient authentication mechanisms, which have been reflected in multiple data breaches tied to its adoption.
