Google Home Hubs: Do You Really Need One?
Google Home doesn't need a dedicated smart home hub for most devices, but there are exceptions. Devices that require hubs include those using Matter and Thread technologies. For example, Matter-enabled devices require a compatible hub to be set up on the local network before adding any other Matter devices. This is because the Google Home app won't let users add these devices without a hub.
On the other hand, Google's cloud-to-cloud communication feature allows most devices to connect directly to the cloud and communicate with each other without needing a hub. However, for those using Google hardware like speakers, doorbells, and thermostats, a dedicated hub may not be necessary. The default path is for these devices to use cloud-to-cloud communication, which doesn't require a bridge or hub.
It's worth noting that while some hubs are compatible with both Matter and Thread technologies, they're not the same thing. Google makes it clear that Matter-enabled hubs are simply Wi-Fi hubs, whereas Thread-enabled hubs have a physical sensor to communicate with Thread smart devices.
