Google Home Premium: Is the Advanced Tier Worth the Extra Cost?

Google Home Premium, a smart home subscription service that replaced Nest Aware nearly a year ago, offers two pricing tiers: Standard at $10 per month or Advanced at $20 per month. For those who pay yearly, the plans cost $100 annually for Home Premium Standard and $200 for Home Premium Advanced.

Brady, a technology journalist for MakeUseOf, recently canceled his Google Home Premium Advanced subscription and switched to the more affordable Home Premium Standard plan after discovering that the higher-priced tier wasn't worth it. He notes that while the service offers several features, including AI notification summaries and a 'Home Brief' recap of the day, most users don't need these advanced features.

The core features of Google Home and Nest speakers, thermostats, displays, and cameras are all free, making the subscription service more of a luxury than a necessity. Brady highlights that even without an active subscription, users can still view recordings for six hours, receive alerts for people, animals, vehicles, motion, and packages, and use features like Live View, Activity Zones, Filters for event history, and Camera Automation.
