Google Honors Women's Progress with Unique Doodle
Google is marking International Women's Day with a unique Doodle that celebrates women's progress over the past century. The multi-layered mandala design, created by artists Julie Wilkinson and Joyanne Horscroft, features layers representing women from different eras: the late 1800s, the 1930s labor movements, the 1950s to 1980s, and today.
The Doodle's creators drew inspiration from the history of International Women's Day and its growth over the years. 'We loved the idea of visually representing the number of women involved in each stage,' they said.
Ahead of the holiday, Google also released trend data on searches related to International Women's Day and women in general. In the US, search interest in women's empowerment increased by more than 330% since 2004, while search interest in women in tech rose over 860% during the same period.
The most searched terms included 'First woman to...' pairings, such as running for president and winning a Nobel Prize. Other popular searches related to 'women in history', including famous, important, influential, strong, and powerful women. Top searched women by profession included Serena Williams, Taylor Swift, Toni Morrison, and Awkwafina.
