Google Integrates Agentic AI Food Ordering into Maps App

Google has introduced an AI-powered food ordering feature within its Google Maps app. The feature, called Ask Maps, allows users to order food from restaurants by typing a message such as 'order a pepperoni pizza for me to pick up on my way home.'

Ask Maps will find open restaurants along the route that serve the requested item and take into account saved places or dietary needs. Once a restaurant is selected, Ask Maps will add the food to a cart for review and editing.

The feature is currently integrated with restaurants using online ordering from Square and Toast, with an Uber Eats integration in the works. This move makes Google the latest entrant into the emerging world of agentic AI food ordering, following DoorDash's launch of Ask DoorDash in June.

Google discontinued its Order with Google feature in 2024, citing customer preference to order directly from restaurants' websites. However, this new feature could play a similar role for restaurants, driving orders to their direct channels and providing commission-free transactions.
