Google is now offering users the option to record a short face video as an additional backup method for account recovery. This feature, which first appeared in July 2026, sits at the intersection of biometric data collection, age verification, and account security.
The selfie video sign-in option is not a replacement for passwords or passkeys but rather a fallback to access an account if other methods are unavailable. Enrollment involves recording a short video while following on-screen prompts to move your head, giving Google multiple angles of your face.
Data use and privacy concerns arise as the video is encrypted by default, with an optional toggle allowing broader data use for facial recognition, age estimation, and verification methods across Google's services. The setup page includes a notable disclosure that the video may be reviewed to determine whether a user is old enough to access certain Google services.
