Google Invests $4.3 Billion in Nuclear Power for AI Expansion
Google has secured a $4.3 billion agreement with Constellation Energy to power its AI infrastructure with 890 megawatts of nuclear energy. The 20-year power purchasing agreement will fund upgrades at six existing nuclear plants across Illinois, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, including modernized turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems. This deal ensures that Constellation can invest in updating 11 of its reactors without passing additional costs to customers.
As part of the arrangement, Constellation will utilize Google's Gemini Enterprise software for site selection, outage management, and infrastructure protection. This investment is part of Google's broader strategy to support its AI expansion, which has led to additional nuclear projects in Georgia, Iowa, and Tennessee.
Big Tech companies are increasingly turning to nuclear energy to meet their growing power demands. In January, Amazon signed a similar deal with Constellation, while Microsoft entered a 20-year agreement in 2024 to source energy from a reactor at Three Mile Island by 2028. Meta has also committed to nuclear power through a deal with Vistra. These firms are also exploring small modular reactors, which offer a more compact and efficient alternative to traditional nuclear plants.
