Google Invests in Georgia Nuclear Expansion to Fuel Data Centers

Google has struck an agreement with Georgia Power to expand output at two nuclear power stations in Georgia, Vogtle and Hatch. The deal is aimed at providing reliable, low-carbon electricity for Google's data centers.

The proposed arrangement involves Google subscribing to power associated with uprates at the two plants, which could add approximately 96 megawatts of generating capacity to the state's electric grid. Georgia Power estimates that the upgrades will produce around $900 million in projected benefits for customers over the operating lives of the nuclear units.

The agreement also includes a Nuclear Uprate tariff and zero-emission credits representing the carbon-free attributes of electricity generated by the incremental nuclear capacity. The deal requires approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission, which is expected to make a decision soon.
