Google Invests in Green Steel to Decarbonize Data Centre Infrastructure
Google has made a significant move towards decarbonizing its data centre infrastructure by partnering with Stegra, a Swedish steel plant developer. The tech giant will acquire environmental attributes tied to up to 91,000 metric tons of near-zero emissions steel produced during the first year of operation.
Stegra's hydrogen-based production process is expected to reduce emissions by up to 95% compared to traditional blast furnaces. This innovative approach uses renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen, which reacts with iron ore to replace coal in the ironmaking process.
The agreement between Google and Stegra has the potential to help Google reduce embodied carbon emissions from its data centre infrastructure by up to 40%. This transaction addresses a growing climate challenge: emissions embedded in materials used to build data centres. Demand for digital infrastructure is rising rapidly, driven in part by artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
The use of environmental attribute certificates (EACs) allows buyers to support lower-emissions production and claim the associated environmental benefits. This model could give steelmakers a financial incentive to invest in cleaner production and help buyers address emissions that sit outside their direct operations.
