Google Japan Unveils Whimsical Conveyor Belt Keyboard Prototype
Google Japan has done it again with its latest outlandish product prototype - a physical Gboard keyboard that's as whimsical as it is experimental. The Gboard Conveyor Belt Version takes a bold approach to solving the inefficiency of standard keyboards, which often lead to finger fatigue over time.
The team's solution is to place keys on a small, vertical conveyor belt that loops endlessly around, bringing columns of keys with it. Users simply hold their hand in front of the conveyor and tap the desired keys as they pass by, keeping fingers directly over each key without having to move their hand.
For optimal feel, the team used Kailh Choc low-profile key switches and caps, while a gear motor powers the conveyor's movement. The prototype even includes an M5Stack AtomS3-Lite development board that monitors keys and provides a USB interface to a computer.
The Google Japan team also experimented with specialty variants of the Gboard Conveyor Belt Version, including a High Speed Model that zips around at incredible rates, as well as models designed for accessibility and nail preservation (with cardboard keys).
