Google has launched the DeepMind Institute to facilitate international discussion on artificial general intelligence (AGI). The institute, led by DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg and Google executive James Manyika, aims to provide a forum for debating AGI among different stakeholders. One of the key concerns is model transparency and safety oversight, with researchers Rogin Shah and Anca Dragan arguing that developers and regulators should account for the risks posed by new architectures.

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, proposed creating a U.S.-led body to evaluate advanced AI models. The proposal suggests that companies would voluntarily submit their systems for testing before release, with passing evaluation becoming a mandatory condition in the United States. The criteria for evaluation could be gradually strengthened depending on the severity of the situation.

The launch of the DeepMind Institute marks a shift towards concrete proposals for information disclosure and independent oversight in the AGI debate. This development reflects growing concerns about the potential consequences of unregulated AI development, including coordinated slowdowns if existing safeguards fail to keep pace with technological progress.
