Google Launches First AI Data Center into Outer Space with Project Suncatcher
Google is pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI) by launching its first AI data center into outer space. The tech giant's Project Suncatcher initiative aims to explore whether space can be an ideal environment for machine learning, specifically how Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) would function.
The prototype satellite will be launched via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on October 1. This is the first step in determining if space could host scalable machine learning, and eventually link together multiple constellations of satellites to manage larger AI workloads.
According to Google, its TPUs can survive radiation levels greater than what they would receive during a five-year space mission. The company has also tested how the AI chips would be cooled in space, using a thermal vacuum chamber to simulate both the thermal and vacuum environment.
