Google Launches Space-Based AI Data Centers
Google has launched Project Suncatcher, an experiment to create AI data centers in space powered by solar energy. The company deployed a refrigerator-sized satellite into orbit with four Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) designed for machine learning tasks.
The prototype satellite will run the Gemma AI model for 15 minutes at a time due to heat management constraints and use the open weight model to answer simple queries.
Google's CEO Sundar Pichai said demand for AI services exceeds supply, and the company expects capital expenditures this year to be $180 billion to $190 billion. The project aims to test how TPUs handle spaceflight and radiation extremes.
