Google Launches Test Satellite for Space-Based AI Data Centers

Google is taking its AI ambitions to new heights, literally. On October 1, the tech giant's first test satellite for Project Suncatcher will be launched into space. This marks a significant step towards building AI data centers in Earth's orbit, an idea aimed at harnessing solar energy instead of constructing massive data centers on the ground.

The MVP (Mission Validation Probe) satellite, built by Planet Labs, is roughly the size of a refrigerator and carries four TPU accelerators developed by Google. These chips will run the Gemini AI system in space. The satellite's solar panels generate about one kilowatt of power, which, combined with cooling limitations, allows the TPUs to operate for only 15 minutes at a time during testing.
