Google Maps Adds Toll Fee Indicator for Driving Routes
Google Maps has been displaying toll charges for driving routes since 2022, a feature that might be new to users unfamiliar with tollways. When planning a trip, a circular icon with the number 1 inside indicates that the route includes tolls, with the total fee shown next to the icon. This amount can vary based on whether the "See toll pass prices" option is selected, which can be adjusted in the Trip Options menu. While Google partners with state governments to estimate toll fees, recent changes in toll costs may not immediately appear on the app.
For public transit users, Google Maps provides fare details, but these can be outdated or incomplete. The app calculates fares based on information from transit operators, assuming a flat rate for each journey segment. However, many transit systems have more complex pricing structures, including free transfers or fare-free programs. For instance, a trip in Boston might show a $1.70 fare on Google Maps, but the actual cost could be zero due to a local pilot program. Users are advised to check with their local transit agency for accurate fare information and to use features like adding boarding passes to Google Wallet.
