Google Maps' Blind Spots: How Direct Routing and GPS Limitations Cause Errors
As an avid user of Google Maps, I've noticed that it sometimes makes mistakes when providing directions. Despite having access to better mapping data than most private companies, Google's app can have blind spots and make nonsensical recommendations for familiar terrain.
The main reason for this is the app's top priority: direct routing. When you set parameters such as battery or gas efficiency, or avoiding unpaved roads, the app calculates the fastest possible route within those limits. However, if you deviate slightly from the original route, the app will recalculate and may select radically different directions without warning you.
Another reason for the errors is that civilian GPS systems have limited precision, gauged in meters instead of inches or centimeters. This can cause the app to 'snap' you to the wrong road or path by accident, especially when driving under a bridge, through a tunnel, or between skyscrapers.
Even with thorough data, Google's maps may not be 100% comprehensive. Official maps, satellite views, Street View recons, and user/business data are synthesized, but only user data is recorded in real-time. This can lead to outdated information, especially if construction has just started in a particular zone.
