Google Maps Defies Tensions with 'Lake America' Update

Google Maps has made a significant update to its platform in response to an executive order signed by President Trump last week. The order directs federal agencies to use 'Lake America' in official databases, maps, and documents as a result of rising trade tensions with Canada.

The US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) updated its records to reflect the new name, prompting Google to roll out the label for users in the US. This change is part of Google's global policy regarding contested or country-specific geographic names.

In a statement, Google explained that under their regional mapping framework, users in the US will see 'Lake America,' while users in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario.' International users will see both names displayed.

Apple Maps has not yet updated its servers with the new name, but it has previously made changes such as switching from 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America.'
