Google Maps Edges Out Apple Maps After 1,000-Mile Road Test

John Velasco of Tom's Guide embarked on a month-long road trip to compare Apple Maps and Google Maps. He covered over 1,000 miles using both navigation apps for his daily commute and weekend trips.

The test revealed that while both services have improved significantly, one app proved more reliable in critical situations. Apple Maps impressed with its detailed interface, including 3D buildings and scenery, making cities like New York feel immersive. However, it occasionally suggested slower routes based on local knowledge.

Google Maps excelled in traffic information, offering features such as estimated toll costs, gas prices, and a route-preview feature that allows drivers to swipe through upcoming directions without zooming around the map. It also proved more consistent at identifying traffic, accidents, and police activity.

In the end, Google Maps took the win due to its stronger traffic information, broader selection of features, and more reliable route suggestions. Apple Maps' attractive interface and detailed maps made it a compelling alternative, but ultimately fell short in critical situations.
