Google Maps Hides Accessibility Feature to Improve Walking Routes
A writer for Android Police discovered that Google Maps' walking routes can be improved by turning on a hidden setting. The default route selection prioritizes speed, but this approach doesn't consider accessibility needs such as stairs and steep inclines.
To change the route selection, users must enter their destination, select the Walking tab, tap the Settings menu, and turn on Wheelchair accessible. This toggle is beneficial for stroller users and anyone who prefers taking elevators.
Once wheelchair accessibility is enabled, Google Maps no longer offers the fastest routes but instead provides options with elevators and roller-friendly inclines.
