Google Maps Reflects Trump's Executive Order Renaming Lake Ontario
Google Maps has made changes to reflect President Donald Trump's executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America for US users. The change was implemented due to an escalating trade feud between the US and Canada, which led to reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars in goods.
The decision affects the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which sets standards for official US maps. However, it does not impact Canadian naming conventions or how the rest of the world refers to the lake.
According to Google, people using Maps in the US will see Lake America, while those in Canada and outside of North America will continue to see both names, Lake Ontario and Lake America.
