Google Maps Reflects Trump's 'Lake America' Executive Order

Google Maps has made a notable change to reflect US President Donald Trump's executive order renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'. According to Google, this decision affects only US users of the service. For them, the lake will now be referred to by its new name. Those in Canada and outside the US and Canada will still see both names on their maps.

This change is part of an escalating trade feud between the US and Canada. The two countries have imposed reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars' worth of goods. Trump's executive order affects the US Geographic Names Information System, which sets standards for official US maps.

Not everyone agrees with this decision. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the name change, while Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York declared that 'New York won't be calling it that.' Phil Scott, Republican governor of neighboring Vermont, called Trump's decision 'petty and disappointing' on social media.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also responded by unveiling a large lakeside sign reading 'Lake Ontario: Now and Always', in English and French. He said the rest of the world will always call it Lake Ontario, regardless of what Trump names it.
