Google Maps Reflects Trump's 'Lake America' Renaming Amid Ongoing Trade Tensions

Google Maps has started displaying 'Lake America' instead of 'Lake Ontario' for its U.S. users, in line with President Donald Trump's executive order last week.

The order was issued to rename the lake as part of ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States.

The trade war between the two countries began shortly after Trump took office in January 2025.

Initially, the U.S. imposed tariffs on Canadian goods under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), citing illicit fentanyl smuggling, trade imbalances, and border security concerns.

In July of this year, the Trump White House invoked Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act to impose import levies of up to 50% on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods.

Using Canada's supply management policies in the dairy industry as justification, the tariffs target various Canadian products while excluding energy and critical minerals.
