Google Maps Reflects Trump's Renaming of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'

Google has updated its maps application to reflect President Donald Trump's recent order to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for users in the United States. This decision comes amidst an escalating trade war between the US and Canada, which have imposed billions of dollars in added tariffs on each other's goods.

The change is based on Google's policy of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). According to Google, users in the US will see 'Lake America', while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario'. Users outside the US and Canada will see both names.

The move echoes a similar decision made by Google in 2025 when Trump ordered the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. However, it has been met with mockery and indifference in both countries. Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded to Trump's order with a billboard-sized message on the Canadian shore: 'Lake Ontario. Now and forever.'
