Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' Amid US-Canada Trade Dispute

Google has started displaying 'Lake America' on its Maps service for US users after President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario amid a trade dispute with Canada.

The lake, which sits between Ontario and New York, will now show both names, with 'Lake America' appearing in parentheses for users outside the US and Canada.

This change follows Google's policy of displaying varying country-specific names for bodies of water. The update is rolling out now, with users in Canada still seeing 'Lake Ontario' as usual.

Trump signed the executive order last week after imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods following trade talks breakdowns. Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by announcing retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on billions of dollars in US goods.
