Google Maps Rolls Out Wheelchair-Accessible Routes Feature
Google Maps has become an essential tool for navigation, especially for those who require mobility aids like wheelchairs or walkers. The app's wheelchair-accessible routes feature is a game-changer, providing users with important information to make transportation easier. This feature identifies public transportation options that offer ramps or other accessibility features and shows paths between stations or bus stops that are more easily accessible.
Data for these routes is gathered through the Local Guides program, where users can contribute to Google Maps by reviewing locations, adding pictures, and answering accessibility-related questions. While this approach has its limitations, including regions with limited coverage, any user in the U.S. is unlikely to face issues with wheelchair-accessible routes.
To access wheelchair-accessible routes on Google Maps, select a destination, choose walking or public transit, and tap on the three dots beside your current location. From there, select Options from the dropdown menu and choose 'Wheelchair accessible' under 'Best route.'
