Google Maps offers a more seamless experience on Android Auto compared to Apple CarPlay, according to a recent hands-on test. While both systems provide basic navigation features like speedometers, lane guidance, and incident reporting, Android Auto excels in several key areas.
The most noticeable difference is the integration of Gemini, Google's AI assistant. On Android Auto, Gemini can be accessed hands-free and handles searches and route changes more efficiently. For example, adding stops or requesting alternative routes was quicker and smoother. CarPlay, however, required manual activation and was slower in processing similar requests.
Android Auto also makes it easier to compare search results and interact with the map. Results are displayed together with ratings and additional time details, while CarPlay shows them one at a time. Additionally, Android Auto supports pinch-to-zoom directly, whereas CarPlay requires entering a separate map-control mode.
Before even entering a destination, Android Auto provides useful shortcuts like a Home button with live ETA and distance, as well as recently visited locations. CarPlay's initial screen was more basic, requiring a search to access the same information. Android Auto also clearly highlights fuel-efficient routes, though CarPlay offers color-scheme controls for better visibility.
For electric vehicle owners, Android Auto offers advanced trip planning features, estimating battery consumption and suggesting charging stops based on traffic, road elevation, and weather. This integration is currently unavailable on CarPlay, making Android Auto a more comprehensive choice for EV drivers.
