Google Messages Redesign Brings Search and Chat Controls Closer to Thumb Reach
Google Messages is undergoing another significant redesign to enhance one-handed navigation and search functionality. A recent discovery in beta builds reveals that key interface elements are being relocated to make it easier to access common actions from the bottom edge of modern smartphones.
The current layout has a floating action button for starting new conversations in the bottom-right corner, accompanied by a Gemini button above it. In contrast, the search icon is positioned at the top right of the header bar. The updated interface flips this arrangement around, bringing essential actions closer to where thumbs naturally rest.
The 'Start chat' button has moved from the right corner to the bottom center, and the main search button now joins it along the bottom navigation area. This redesign is also context-aware, with the 'Start chat' pill collapsing as you scroll down through your message list, making way for an expanded Search button.
This overhaul aligns with earlier reports suggesting a broader Google Messages search makeover, featuring larger visual previews and a dedicated results screen that separates group chats from individual messages. Additionally, pinned conversations are being revamped to display live message previews when new texts arrive and limit the total number of pinned chats.
