Google Messages Takes Step Closer to RCS Video Calls

The RCS standard is expanding to include native video calls in chats. This development is significant for Google Messages, which has already seen a boost from supporting RCS features. The arrival of RCS has helped modernize text messaging on Android and level the playing field with iOS.

Google Messages first referenced support for RCS video calls earlier this year. Although the feature is not yet live, new evidence suggests that the company is making progress. An APK teardown revealed strings related to confirmation screens for initiating calls via RCS video.

The presence of these strings and internal checks indicates that Google is working on implementing RCS video call support in Messages. However, more substantial evidence is needed before a proper RCS video call interface can be seen.
