Google Number One Rankings Often Go Unmentioned by ChatGPT
A new study by Discoverable found that Google's number one ranked business in nearly three-quarters of ChatGPT answers remains unnamed. This phenomenon occurred across six consumer AI services, including Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot.
The research collected 17,537 completed answers from these services for 1,000 buying questions across 25 commercial categories. It also captured 3,000 Google results for the same questions. The study found that when a business ranked first on Google, it went unnamed in 72.5% of eligible ChatGPT answers.
The study compared Google's first organic result with the ChatGPT answer, and if the business was not named, it counted as an omission. In total, the business at Google's first position went unnamed in 66.2% of scored comparisons across all six services.
Discoverable conducted this research to understand the gap between a business ranking high on Google and being easily discoverable through AI-powered chatbots. The company helps businesses improve their AI visibility by providing software that identifies how their brand is represented online.
