Google Offers Engineers Access to Rival AI Model Claude Amid Gemini Competition
Google has expanded access to Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 for internal coding through its Antigravity development platform, according to Business Insider. This decision marks a change from Google's previous approach, which generally restricted employees from using external coding tools like Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. However, the company emphasizes that Gemini remains its primary model for internal development.
The shift in policy allows engineers to use select third-party models alongside Gemini for specialized work. The availability of Claude is limited by quotas and routed through Antigravity, which aligns with Google's external Antigravity enterprise offering. This means that while engineers have access to Claude, they are still required to use it within the confines of Antigravity.
This move reflects a practical calculation on Google's part: when AI coding can impact engineering speed across thousands of employees, restricting workers to a single model may matter less than giving them access to whichever approved system performs a particular job well. By allowing engineers to use multiple models, Google can observe how each system performs in real development environments and gather feedback for improving Gemini.
