Google Offers Face Video Sign-In Option for Account Recovery

Google has introduced an optional feature that allows users to record a face video for account recovery. Rolled out in July 2026, this tool is designed as a fallback for users who are locked out of their accounts and cannot access their usual sign-in methods.

The selfie video sign-in option is available on Google's homepage, where users can choose to enroll or decline. Enrollment involves recording a short video while following on-screen prompts to move your head, giving Google multiple angles of your face. The process uses movement-based checks to confirm that a real person is recording the video.

While the feature is optional and does not replace passwords, passkeys, or two-step verification, it provides an additional layer of security for users who rely on a single device or phone number. Google encrypts the video by default and offers an opt-in toggle for broader data use. However, the enrollment page includes a notable age-verification disclosure.

The selfie video option is unavailable for Google Workspace accounts, child accounts, and accounts enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program. Users who decline to enroll can still access their account using existing sign-in methods, which remain unaffected either way.
