Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic Launch Frontiers in AI Regulation
Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic are planning to establish a common standards organization for frontier artificial intelligence, according to The Information. This proposed group, called the Standards Authority for Frontier AI (SAFA), would act as a third-party entity to monitor and regulate advanced AI models.
The idea behind SAFA stems from a proposal by Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, who suggested building a self-regulating organization similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. This group would develop common standards to assess frontier AI models and conduct benchmark testing.
SAFA could launch as early as 2027, with several key figures approached for positions in the group, including former White House AI policy adviser Sriram Krishnan and venture capitalist David Friedberg. Potential scientific consultants include Metr founder and CEO Beth Barnes and Paul Christiano, who advises the Center for AI Standards and Innovation.
