Google Opens Up Google Home to Third-Party AI Agents

Google has announced that it will add AI support for other agents beyond its own Gemini AI in Google Home. This means users can now interact with their devices and event history using AI agents like Anthropic's Claude, OpenClaw, and Hermes.

The company is rolling out this feature to Google Home Premium Advanced users in the US first, who will need a $20 subscription to access these capabilities. The announcement comes after Google previously released Gemini for Home as a voice assistant and controller for smart devices.

Users can now use their preferred AI agent to control their thermostat, set up automations, and tap into data that Gemini for Home may not provide on its own. However, some users have raised concerns about the potential risks of integrating third-party AIs with home systems, including vulnerabilities like prompt injection attacks.

Google's Model Context Protocol technology will enable these interactions between AI agents and Google Home devices. The company is encouraging users to report feedback to its smart home developers' help channel as this feature begins rolling out in early access.
