Google Opens Up Smart Home Control to Third-Party AI Agents via Model Context Protocol

Google has rolled out early access to its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for Google Home, allowing AI agents that support MCP to connect securely and access real-time controls. This marks a significant shift in how users interact with their smart homes.

The protocol enables third-party AI assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, Hermes, OpenClaw, and Antigravity to control devices such as Nest doorbells and thermostats, as well as Matter-compliant devices like smart bulbs. Users can leverage their preferred AI agents for tasks like reviewing camera summaries, monitoring activity logs, or building custom dashboards.

However, the current implementation requires a technical setup that may limit adoption to power users and developers. To establish the connection, users must create a Google Cloud project, configure it specifically for Home MCP, and provide configuration details to their chosen AI agent.
