Google Ordered to Make Ad Tech More Open Amid Antitrust Ruling
Google's ad tech business has been impacted by an antitrust ruling, but the company is still allowed to keep its AdX exchange and publisher ad server.
The US District Judge Leonie Brinkema ordered Google to make its ad technology interoperable with rival products, share more auction information, and appoint an internal monitor for antitrust compliance. The remedies are in place for six years, a shorter period than the 15 years sought by the Department of Justice.
While the ruling does not break up Google or force it to sell AdX, it does create opportunities for rival exchanges and publishers to access data and inventory more easily. However, it is unclear when and how this will happen, as integrations take time and require technical changes from both sides.
The ruling has been met with mixed reactions, with some seeing it as a step towards greater competition in the ad tech market, while others argue that behavioral restrictions leave too much responsibility with Google.
