Google Partners with Georgia Power to Upgrade Nuclear Plants
Georgia Power and Google have proposed a partnership to upgrade two nuclear power plants in Georgia. If approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission, Google would pay a subscription fee to support upgrades at Plant Vogtle and Plant Hatch.
The agreement is not tied to any specific data center project in Georgia, according to Georgia Power spokesman Jacob Hawkins. Instead, it would provide $900 million in long-term benefits to Georgia Power's 2.8 million customers.
Hawkins said that the proposal is a win-win for both Google and Georgia Power customers, as it allows for upgrades to be made while also providing financial benefits to ratepayers.
However, some groups have raised concerns about environmental risks and potential additional costs associated with such agreements. Hawkins acknowledged these concerns but emphasized that the proposal would provide long-term benefits to ratepayers.
