Google Partners with Stegra for Green Steel EACs to Tackle Data Center Emissions
Google has signed an agreement with green iron and steel maker Stegra to purchase environmental attribute certificates (EACs) connected to the production of near-zero emissions steel from Stegra's upcoming plant in Sweden. The deal is aimed at helping Google address emissions from its operations, particularly those related to data center construction.
Stegra's process utilizes hydrogen produced using green power to remove oxygen from iron oxide, reducing CO2 emissions by most of the amount normally produced. The company is building a large-scale green steel plant in Boden, Sweden, with an annual production capacity of 5 million tonnes. Stegra recently secured €1.4 billion in financing to complete construction.
Under the agreement, Google will purchase EACs from up to 91,000 tons of the steel produced in Stegra's first year of operation. Google aims to use these certificates to help address steel-related emissions from its own operations. The company has set a target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
