Google Photos vs Gallery: Which App Fits Your Needs
Google offers two distinct apps for managing photos: Google Photos and Gallery. While Google Photos is widely known, Gallery is a simpler alternative developed by Google itself, not to be confused with branded versions like Samsung's Gallery. Both apps can coexist on your phone, allowing you to choose based on your needs.
The key difference lies in cloud backup. Google Photos automatically backs up images to the cloud, whereas Gallery does not. Cloud storage is shared across Google services, with old accounts getting 15GB free and new ones (created on or after March 9, 2026) getting 5GB, expandable to 15GB with a verified phone number. Additional storage requires a Google One subscription, starting at $2 per month for 100GB. Photos also allows freeing up space by deleting locally stored images already backed up to the cloud.
Editing tools are another major distinction. Gallery offers basic features like rotate, crop, and a few filters. Google Photos, however, provides a comprehensive suite, including AI enhancements, brightness and contrast adjustments, blurring effects, and more. This makes Photos the better choice for regular editors, while Gallery suffices for minimal adjustments.
Both apps support sharing images via social media, email, or messaging. If you prefer manual backups and external storage, Gallery is a viable option. However, for seamless cloud integration and advanced editing, Google Photos remains the more robust choice.
