Google Pixel 11's Vanilla camera look revives natural photography
The Google Pixel 11 series has introduced a significant improvement to its camera system with the new Camera Looks feature, addressing a long-standing issue with dull and unnatural photos. Rita, a Senior Features Editor at Android Police, highlights how the Vanilla look in particular has resolved the problem of overly processed HDR images that lacked warmth and vibrancy. This issue became prominent with the Pixel 7 and 8, peaking with the Pixel 9, where colors were often stripped out of their natural appearance.
The Vanilla look, found under the Camera app's Looks settings, provides a more natural and warm alternative to the default Original look. It better captures the golden hour, indoor scenes, and even bright outdoor environments, making photos appear more alive and accurate. Rita notes that Vanilla works well in 90% of her photography situations, from dimly-lit restaurants to fall landscapes, though it may not be perfect for every scenario.
While the Original look enhances blues and works well on sunny days, it often makes indoor and golden hour shots appear cold and unnatural. The Vanilla look, however, brings back the warmth and vibrancy that Pixel cameras were known for, making it Rita's default choice. Despite its strengths, there are still some situations where the Original look might be more suitable, particularly in very bright conditions.
