Google Pixel Serves as Portable Linux PC for Tech Journalist
Dibakar Ghosh, a tech journalist at How-To Geek, recently discovered that his Google Pixel can serve as a portable Linux PC. He started using his Raspberry Pi for various tasks, including running Docker containers and local AI servers, but found it wasn't powerful enough to keep up with his demands.
He then turned to his main workstation, turning it into his primary homelab. However, he soon realized that his actual work requirements were lean, and he was curious about moving his workload to his phone. This led him to experiment with using his Google Pixel as a portable PC.
The Pixel has had a desktop mode for some time now, which allows users to pair it with a monitor, mouse, and keyboard to create a working computer. The experience is clean and perfect for quick computing. Ghosh's workflow involves jotting down ideas on his Pixel, connecting it to a monitor, and using Notion and Google Keep snapped side by side.
Another feature of the Pixel that impressed Ghosh was its native Linux terminal, which runs a full Debian Linux environment inside a virtual machine. With this terminal, users can install command-line tools and use them as they normally would on their Raspberry Pi.
