Google Play Mandates Memory Optimization for Mobile Apps and Games in 2027
Google Play has announced new memory and code optimization standards for mobile apps and games. Starting in February 2027, developers will be required to optimize their applications' memory usage based on device RAM and adhere to DEX code requirements. This move is attributed to rising RAM prices, industry-wide hardware supply constraints, and the Android platform's inherent memory limitations.
The new standards will evaluate app and game quality based on the 90th percentile (P90) of data collected over the preceding 28 days. The P90 metric means that 90% of measured values fell at or below that level. For example, games with DEX code exceeding 50MB must achieve at least 25% each for obfuscation, optimization, and shrinking rates in App Bundles submitted to Play Console.
Games that fail to comply with the new standards may experience reduced visibility or restricted publishing capabilities on Google Play. The company recommends R8 as an optimization tool but noted that other tools may also be used if they meet the criteria. Apps and games that fail to comply will face further details regarding implementation, which will be disclosed within 2026.
