Google Play Subscriptions Get a Major Overhaul
Google is revamping its Google Play subscription system to make it more flexible and user-friendly. The company is testing new billing options, including Usage-Based Billing, which targets services with variable costs such as generative AI apps. This system allows users to maintain a prepaid balance that automatically tops up when it drops below a set threshold.
The new system aims to simplify the subscription process for users and developers alike. Google is also introducing Multi-Quantity Subscriptions for groups, which enables businesses or organizations to buy several subscriptions in one transaction and assign them to employees or members. This feature is designed to make it easier for companies to manage their team's subscriptions.
In addition, Google is working on features that help prevent users from losing access to their subscriptions due to failed payments or cancellations. Dynamic Grace Period uses machine learning and heuristic models to adjust the duration of a user's subscription after a payment failure, while Retention Offers can surface discounts during cancellation. Developers can also suggest cheaper plans, and former subscribers may see personalized winback offers directly in the Play Store.
