Google Pours $15 Billion into Finnish AI Infrastructure
Google, the tech giant owned by Alphabet Inc., has announced plans to invest at least €13 billion ($15.1 billion) in AI infrastructure in Finland over the next two years.
The investment will go towards building three new data centers and related infrastructure, which will be powered in part by a 22-year deal for up to 50% of the output of one of Finland's nuclear power plants.
This agreement marks Google's first nuclear energy deal outside the United States and is seen as a cost-efficient location for its expanding AI infrastructure due to Finland's cold climate, which reduces the need for energy-intensive cooling.
However, some have raised concerns about rising demand for electricity in the region, competition from other companies like Microsoft and ByteDance, and potential permitting challenges.
